Can a hard disk be repaired?

A mechanical storage drive, such as a hard disk drive (HDD), which has suffered severe damage that prevents its normal operation, requires exclusive and professional attention from data recovery experts. There are no exceptions in this case, as any attempt at improper handling significantly increases the risk of further damaging the drive and drastically reducing the chances of a successful data recovery.

Often, our customers ask us if we offer hard drive repair services in our lab. On such occasions, we explain that our focus is on data recovery from damaged devices. Depending on the nature of the damage or failure of the drive, it is possible that during the process we may perform part replacements on the hard drive, which can theoretically restore its functionality.

However, it is important to note that this restoration is specific to the data recovery process. After a hard disk has been intervened, its use for data storage is not recommended at all due to the high risk of failure. In other words, after intervention on an HDD, it becomes extremely delicate and its probability of failure increases considerably.

Therefore, once we have recovered information from a damaged hard disk, it is essential to acquire a new hard disk or other storage device and move the recovered information to that new medium to ensure its safety and preservation.

This week’s story is from our client Enrique, who brought us his hard drive reporting that it just simply stopped working from one day to another. It wasn’t being detected on his computer. Enrique was worried because he needed all the files on his desktop, documents folder, downloads folder and all .pst and .ost files.

After conducting an urgent diagnosis, our data recovery experts detected physical failures. This case required a donor, and after Enrique accepted to continue with the process, we exchanged parts between the original hard drive and the donor.
